The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is a biomedical research facility in the United States that focuses on biomedical and health-related research. It is the primary agency of the United States government responsible for biomedical research and is affiliated with the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The NIH conducts its own scientific research through its Intramural Research Program (IRP) and provides major biomedical research funding to non-NIH research facilities through its Extramural Research Program. With 27 separate institutes and centers, the NIH has made significant scientific accomplishments, including the discovery of fluoride to prevent tooth decay and the creation of vaccines against hepatitis and human papillomavirus. Established in 1887, the NIH is based in Bethesda, Maryland.
